Andrew Ertel

Ecopreneur and commodity markets innovator Andrew Ertel, former founder CEO of Evolution Markets, serves as Chief Investment Officer of Evolution Environmental Asset Management (EEAM).

Mr. Ertel began his career in the oil and natural gas trading pits of the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX) before transitioning 25 years ago to brokerage of emerging environmental trading markets. Mr. Ertel is a market pioneer, having built one of the first carbon brokerage teams and transacted his first carbon deal in 1997.

He founded Evolution Markets as one of the first dedicated energy and environmental markets brokerage firms and has since grown it into a pre-eminent firm in the space. Initially focused on the UN’s Clean Development Mechanism, the Evolution Markets team facilitated investments in hundreds of projects in over 30 countries, through offices in New York, London, Beijing, New Delhi, Johannesburg, Bratislava, and more. Throughout this time, Mr. Ertel advised EU regulators, U.S. lawmakers, and the White House on the formation of key carbon markets. He also co-founded the Environmental Markets Association and the Green Exchange, a pioneering environmental marketplace. In 2003, he was inducted to the Energy Risk Hall of Fame.

Under Mr. Ertel’s leadership, Evolution Markets has sustained the longest track record of any market participant in the global environmental markets. Over the past 20 years, the award-winning team he built has drawn on deep product knowledge, sophisticated financial acumen, and market relationships to guide project developers, speculators, and compliance entities through carbon transactions. Along the way, he has led and structured deals with numerous investors and corporate buyers, assisting them in constructing de-risked offset portfolios. These achievements, among others, have been recognized with over 150 awards for excellence in brokerage services, including in the Environmental Finance Survey and Energy Risk Commodity Rankings.

Mr. Ertel’s unparalleled vision and experience in environmental markets will position EEAM at the forefront of present and future opportunities in the carbon and environmental markets.
